Bone Anchored Hearing Aids
|
Bone anchored hearing aids are a new generation of hearing aids that are surgically implanted. These devices are indicated for pediatric patients with atresia of the ear canal, adults with conductive hearing loss (problem result of abnormalities of the hearing bones not the hearing nerve), those patients who cannot wear traditional hearing aids, and for patients and patients with one sided sensorineural hearing loss (nerve hearing loss). The bone anchored device consists of a small screw that is surgically implanted into an inconspicuous location behind the ear during an outpatient surgical procedure that takes about 60 minutes. After allowing the screw time to incorporate into the bone, the hearing aid will be attached to the screw. The hearing aid restores hearing to patients with conductive hearing loss, improves hearing for patients with sensorineural hearing loss and gives patients with one sided hearing loss the ability to discriminate where sounds are coming from (sound field localization). The implant procedure is extremely safe with a low incidence of complications. Complications that do occur include bleeding, loss of skin around the screw site and failure of the screw to become integrated into the bone. If you think that you or a loved one may be a candidate of bone anchored hearing aids please feel free to contact us.
