Prominent cheek bones and a strong chin give the face both a youthful and balanced appearance. Furthermore, when the chin is small this can make other structures such as the nose appear disproportionately large. By the same token, since as patients age they often lose volume in the cheeks this can give the face a hollow, sunken appearance. Chin and cheek implants are made of a solid silicone, which is readily accepted by the body with a low incidence of complications such as extrusion or infection (around 2%). The cheek implants are placed via a small incision in the mouth while the chin implant is placed with a minimal incision in a skin crease underneath the chin. These are typically sutured into place with a single permanent suture to ensure the implant stays in place. Complications can include bleeding, infection, implant extrusion or migration but these are quite uncommon. Patients may also experience numbness which is most often temporary. These procedures can be offered independently or as part of a rhinoplasty or aging face procedure. Downtime is usually around one to two weeks.
