As in the rest of the body, as we age the neck tends to accumulate excess fat. This can create or contribute to loss of the jaw line and give the face and neck a prematurely aged look. Removing this fat is similar to other areas of the body where liposuction is used. This is typically done through a small incision in the chin and is often combined with tightening of the neck muscles to improve the neck contour. Neck liposuction can be done in concert with a face lift to address tissue laxity in both the face and neck simultaneously.
The downtime from having this procedure is typically about two weeks after which time the majority of swelling and bruising will resolve. The appearance of the neck will continue to approve over the next several weeks to months. After surgery you will be placed in a pressure dressing which will be removed on the second post-operative day. Patients are asked to wear a "jaw bra" for one week after surgery all the time, and at night only for a second week. Complications from neck liposuction are few and include a small risk of possible blood collection, numbness and banding in areas where fat was removed. Tissue laxity may, over time recur.
